Product Details

Dogtooth calcite can be found in open spaces or in caves, geodes and veins. It consists of large calcite crystals thought to resemble dogs' teeth due to the 'pointed' crystal habit.

Dolomite forms white, pink or tan crystals. It is formed in hydrothermal veins and frequently in cavities of limestone and marble.

The Lockport Formation is Middle Silurian in age (420 million years old) and mostly made up of dolomite limestone and shale. The rocks formed from marine sediments that were deposited within a tidal zone and then briefly exposed to erosion above sea level. Some minerals of the exposed sediments were dissolved by rain water leading to the formation of cavities.

The Penfield is one of three vertical members of the Lockport formation and is comprised of dolomitic sandstone and quartzose dolomite.
